How does the antivirus check work?

It is free and fast. Just klick the `virus scan' botton whenever you want check for malware before you download a file.
♦  If no virus has been found you will get an acknowledgement and you may proceed with the download.
♦  When a virus has been detected a warning will be issued.
♦  It may occur that the link is broken or that the hosting server does not respond. You will then receive a message too.
There exist (mostly harmless) test viruses on various webpages. You may use them to try the antivirus scan.
Search for test malware and try out the antivirus scan.
Note that no warranty is provided. FindFiles.net employs the ClamAV® open source antivirus engine for detecting viruses and malware. There may be malware escaping the detection by the ClamAV® antivirus scan.

Do I need to type in the filename extension?

In general there is no need to enter filename extensions, you may find all data types within their respective FindFiles categories and subcategories. We provide however the option to search explicitly for file extensions. Use
when looking for a Flash (.swf) Super Mario Brothers game, or
for bmp or gif files of Lady Gaga.
FindFiles.net will display topmost the results matching the desired file extension. Results matching the search query, but not the desired file extension, will be still available for browsing in their respective FindFiles categories and subcategories.
A complete overview over all file extensions and file formats supported by FindFiles.net can be found in our file format finder.

How do I select the file size?

Very simple. Use
for images of the Yellowstone National Park larger than 500K Bytes,
for Hip Hop music clips larger than 100K and smaller than 2M Bytes and
for a Tetris game smaller than 1M Bytes.
Supported tags are 'b/k/m/g/t' for 'Bytes/Kilo/Mega/Giga/Tera'. You may also use capital letters 'B/K/M/G/T'.

Do not leave empty spaces. Query strings like '1m - 3m' will direct FindFiles to scan the database for '1m' and '3m' entries.

Yes you can, just head for the 'misc' miscellaneous category. Enter, for example,
when searching for basketball-league news.
Feeds correspond, from a technical perspective, to well defined Mime Types and are hence part of the FindFiles.net database.

What is a Mime type?

A Mime type is an identifier for file formats on the Internet. FindFiles supports all registered Mime types. You do not need to bother about Mime types when using FindFiles. Just select the desired file category and subcategories once your search results are displayed.
We maintain a file format list. which you may consult when in doubt where to find the file type you are looking for.

Can I search in any language?

Yes you can, using any alphabet and character-set you like. We support the standard Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Arabic scripts as well as Chinese, Japanese and Korean Han ideographs, and many more.

Archives - the secret treasure trove!

Large files, especially audio files and video clips, are often compressed, for example as '.zip' or '.gzip' archives. Also, many files, like software packages of the songs of an artist, may be combined into a single '.tar' archive, or the like. If you cannot find your desired music- or video clip in the 'audio' or 'video' categories - head for the 'archives' category and you will find many treasures there.

Why is word stemming not supported?

With word stemming searching for 'games' would include searching for 'game'. Many file searches are however very specific and word stemming would quite often produce inferior results. With further development of FindFiles we will however present word stemming as an on/off option.

Can I search for streaming data?

Currently not. Presently you can search for everything which is downloadable. Streaming formats (also knows as 'tubes') will be implemented at a later stage.
